Totally with you on this one, Alyssa. Drift was the one thing that could sour an otherwise magical handheld, so proper Hall effect sticks (or something equally durable) would be a huge win for peace of mind. My personal add to the wishlist is a smoother, faster UI and quicker load into games from sleep, plus the backwards compatibility the OP mentioned so my library carries over. If Nintendo nails the little quality-of-life stuff on top of more power for third-party ports, I think a lot of us will be very happy campers. What one first-party game would make it a day-one buy for you?

The Virtual Console point is the one I'd underline twice. The current subscription drops are lovely, but a proper storefront where you can actually buy and permanently own individual classics - N64, GameCube, maybe even a curated Rare or Game Boy shelf - would be such a treat. It's funny timing too: I was just looking at a little retro handheld that rebuilt Banjo-Kazooie to run natively, and it reminded me how much appetite there still is for these old gems done right. If the Switch 2 pairs that kind of respect for the back catalogue with the horsepower for modern ports, it really could be the best of both worlds. Which era would you most want to see preserved - the N64/GameCube 3D classics, or the 2D 8/16-bit stuff?

The third-party ports line is the one I'd poke at from the PC side, Ana. Here's the tension: the handheld PC world has basically decided that raw silicon isn't the bottleneck anymore - the new Intel and AMD handheld chips can push native 1200p now - the problem is battery, heat and price. A device that runs Cyberpunk at 30fps for 90 minutes and gets hot enough to fry an egg isn't the dream.
Where Nintendo has always won is the opposite discipline: they lock the hardware spec and make devs optimize against a fixed target for years. That's why a technically weaker Switch could run Doom and Witcher 3 at all - the ports were hand-tuned because the platform never moved. Honestly, Marko? Give me the two extra hours every single time. That fixed-target point you made is the whole reason I'd take that trade without blinking - a Switch port that's locked to 720p handheld but runs rock-steady and lets me play a full flight or a whole evening on the couch without hunting for a charger is worth way more to me than one that chases the console's pixel count and dies in 90 minutes.
And I think that's the bit people underrate about Nintendo: they design around how you actually play, not around a benchmark screenshot. Half my Switch time is 20-minute bursts with my nephew, or in bed before sleep. Nobody in those moments is squinting at texture resolution - they just want it to boot fast and not stutter.

Not a bridge too far at all, Ana - honestly you've talked me most of the way over. The dirty secret of the PC handheld scene is that native 1200p is mostly a spec-sheet flex. In practice everyone drops to 800p and turns on FSR or XeSS upscaling anyway, because that's what keeps you above 40fps without the fans screaming. So my "1200p dream" was already a fantasy the second I plugged in headphones and wanted the battery to last a train ride.
What I actually want is exactly your floor: a locked, stable frame time. A rock-steady 720p/30 that never hitches beats a wobbly 1080p that dips to 22 every time you turn a corner. Frame pacing is felt, resolution is just counted - and your brain forgives a soft image way faster than it forgives a stutter.

You just handed me my favourite thing about this whole console generation, Marko. That Xbox back-catalogue work is exactly the model I wish everyone would copy. Take a game that was already finished and lovingly tuned, then give it cleaner edges and a steadier frame on modern screens - no remaster budget, no re-buy, just respect for the thing that already exists.
And that's where it loops right back to the Virtual Console point from earlier in the thread. Microsoft has quietly become the company that's best at saying "your old library still matters and you get to keep playing it." If Nintendo brought even half that energy to a Switch 2 - a proper storefront where you buy and own the classic, running native on a fixed chip devs can tune against for years - the preservation crowd and the battery-life crowd both win at once.

You're dead right that 1200p is a flex, but I'd push the frame-pacing point one layer deeper: on a handheld the killer isn't just render resolution, it's the shared LPDDR5X pool. CPU and GPU are fighting over the same memory bandwidth, so when a scene gets busy you don't just lose fps, you get bandwidth-starved frametime spikes that no upscaler hides. That's why a locked 720p/40 with a hard framerate cap feels miles better than an uncapped 1080p that stutters - the cap keeps the memory controller from thrashing.
Which is exactly why a fixed Nintendo target could win here. Devs tune against a known bandwidth budget for years instead of guessing across a dozen PC configs. Give me a stable frametime line over a pixel count every day.

This is the part of the thread that actually keeps me up at night, Rene, and I say that as the resident optimist. You and Marko can argue frametimes forever and I'll happily nod along, but memory prices are the thing that lands on families. If component costs climb, it doesn't show up as a worse chip - Nintendo locked that in years ago. It shows up as the console never getting its mid-life price drop, or the drop coming late and small. And the mid-life price cut has historically been the moment a Nintendo machine goes from "the enthusiast's handheld" to "the thing under every kid's tree." If 2027 memory prices quietly delete that moment, that's a real loss, and nobody will ever announce it. It'll just... not happen.
My small consolation, and it's a very me consolation: at least the games themselves are trending in a good direction on the preservation front. I spent this morning cooing over the Stardew Valley physical Switch 2 edition - actual current version on the actual cartridge, a real printed manual, works on both generations of the console. No download code rattling in a box. If hardware is going to get more expensive through no fault of anyone in this thread, then the software had better be something you genuinely own and can still boot in fifteen years. That's my line in the sand, kindly but firmly.
So my wishlist item, appended to the OP: whatever the memory market does, keep real games on real cards. The bandwidth budget is your department - the shelf is mine.

I came back to this thread specifically to eat my words, except the words turned out to be too optimistic rather than too gloomy. When I worried about the mid-life price cut quietly never arriving, I was picturing a drop that just... doesn't happen. Instead Nintendo has gone the other way: from September 1 the Switch 2's US list price goes from $449.99 to $499.99. Fifty dollars up, on a console barely a year into its life. And the wording in the notice isn't "temporary" - it's about market conditions expected to last medium to long term, which is corporate for "settle in."
So your bandwidth-budget tangent turned out to be the most load-bearing post in the thread. You called the BOM pressure; it just cashed out faster and more bluntly than either of us expected.
What gets me isn't the number itself, it's that a console going *up* mid-generation breaks the one promise hardware has always kept. Second one, Ana. Almost certainly the second one, and I'd rather it were the first.
Here's my reasoning. Nobody pre-prices a crunch that's still 18 months out - you can't defend that to shareholders and you'd eat a year of bad press for margin you haven't lost yet. Companies price what's already landing in the purchase orders they're signing *now*. So a $50 bump today isn't a forecast, it's a receipt. It means the absorbing already happened, quietly, for several quarters, and somebody finally ran the numbers and said we can't keep doing this.
The tell is exactly the bit of wording you flagged. If this were pre-emptive they'd have called it temporary - that's the cheap out, it costs nothing to say and you look generous when you reverse it. "Market conditions expected to last medium to long term" is what you write when you've already decided you're not reversing it.
And the structural reason is grim and boring: the memory makers are shifting wafer capacity toward HBM for AI accelerators, because that's where the margin is by a wide margin. Commodity DRAM and LPDDR aren't getting squeezed by a demand spike so much as by supply being deliberately walked away from. That's a capex-and-fab-schedule problem, and fabs don't turn on a dime - you're looking at years, not a bad quarter. Which is why I don't think $499.99 is a ceiling. I'd call it a floor with a polite name.
The part that actually bugs me is what you said about waiting being the losing move. That inverts the one rule consumer electronics has always followed. I told people in the PC thread to buy the RAM kit *first* and build around it, which is genuinely insane advice by any normal logic - RAM is the commodity part, it's supposed to get cheaper while you shop. Now it's the appreciating asset in the build. Same disease, different box. You just can't route around it on your side, because the sealed box doesn't let you buy the memory early.
One small thing in your favour though: Nintendo's BOM is locked on a mature node with a chip they're not redesigning, and unit volume is their whole religion. If memory eases even slightly they have more room to move than a PC OEM does, because everything else in that box is already cheap and getting cheaper. I wouldn't bet on a cut. But if any hardware company claws one back, it's the one that treats install base as the actual product.
Your line in the sand is the right one, for what it's worth. If the hardware is going to drift up regardless, ownership of the software is the only variable left that anyone can still win.
