Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Lets You Command the Battlefield With a Joy-Con 2 Mouse

There's a very specific little frustration every Fire Emblem player knows. You're six turns deep into a map, you nudge the cursor one tile too far, you tap back, you overshoot again, and by the time you finally land on the square you wanted, you've lost the thread of the plan you were building in your head. It's a tiny thing. It has also happened to me roughly nine thousand times.

So when Nintendo confirmed this week that Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, my first reaction wasn't "cute gimmick." It was relief.

The idea is simple: you slide a Joy-Con 2 along a desk - or your knee, or a couch cushion, let's be honest about how people actually play - like a mouse, and use it to move units around the battlefield and quickly pull up the information you need. It's a first for the series. And the detail I keep circling back to is that Nintendo says you can swap between button and mouse controls whenever you like. It's not a mode you commit to at the start of a chapter and then regret three enemy phases later.

Grid tactics have been waiting for this

Turn-based strategy is, deep down, a PC genre wearing a console jacket. Pointing at a tile and saying "there" is the most natural input in the world for this stuff, and every controller version of it since forever has been a polite workaround. Directional pads and sticks are wonderful for platformers and fighters. For scanning a twenty-by-twenty grid and comparing three possible flank routes? Not so much.

What makes this feel more like a genuine fit than a hardware demo is that Fire Emblem is full of menu-diving. Checking weapon triangles, hovering over an enemy's range, popping into a support conversation, comparing stats before you commit a unit into danger. That's a lot of little pointing tasks stacked on top of each other, and the mouse mode is apparently aimed squarely at making those faster.

I'll admit I was a bit lukewarm on Joy-Con 2 mouse controls when they were first shown. Cool trick, sure, but I couldn't picture a game where I'd *want* it over a stick. This is that game. This is exactly that game.

The other thing quietly worth noting: being able to flip between inputs mid-battle is genuinely friendly design. If you play docked on the couch with no flat surface, buttons are still right there. If you're at a desk with an evening free and a map that needs proper thinking, slide the Joy-Con and go. Nobody has to pick a side.

Fortune's Weave arrives on Switch 2 on 17 September. I've been going back and forth on how excited I am about this one since the Direct earlier in the week, and honestly, it's a control scheme that tipped me over.
