Gothic 1 Remake Review: A Faithful Return to the Colony

Few RPGs mean as much to people around here as Gothic. Back in 2001, a small German studio, Piranha Bytes, dropped you naked into a penal colony sealed under a magic barrier and basically said: figure it out. No hand-holding, no glowing quest markers, just a world that didn't care whether you lived or died. Twenty-five years later, Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic have rebuilt it in Unreal Engine 5 - and the miracle is that it still doesn't care about you.

What it is. An action-RPG set in the mining colony around Khorinis, where the Nameless Hero is thrown in with murderers and thieves and has to earn his place among the camps. The remake is bigger than the original: chapters 2 through 5 that were trimmed for budget in 2001 are fleshed out, the world is 10-30% larger, and there's roughly 20 hours of extra content. Original composer Kai Rosenkranz returns for the soundtrack, and the German voice cast is back where possible.

How it plays. Exactly as brutally as you remember. A couple of scavengers and a molerat will end your run in the first ten minutes if you charge in swinging. Combat has been modernized - it's stamina-based, weightier and more readable than the original's clunky stance system - but it still rewards patience and positioning over button-mashing. What hasn't changed, thank god, is the sense of a living world. NPCs have schedules, factions have politics, and the freedom to wander into a fight you have no business surviving is the whole point.

The highs. Atmosphere. The colony feels grimy, lived-in and genuinely dangerous in a way most modern open worlds don't. The reworked orc lore and expanded quests give returning players real reasons to come back.

The lows. It's rough. AI pathfinding glitches, the odd physics hiccup, and a difficulty curve that will lose newcomers who've never touched a Piranha Bytes game. This is not a polished, frictionless AAA experience - and if you need one, look elsewhere.

Price and availability (in our region). 49.99 euros on Steam and GOG (PC), 59.99 euros on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S - the console version bundles Gothic Classic, the 2001 original, on consoles for the first time. There's a 199.99-euro Collector's Edition for the die-hards. No Croatian subtitles, but English and German are both fully voiced.

Verdict. This is how you remake a cult classic: modernize the frame, keep the soul. It's janky, it's unforgiving, and it absolutely will not hold your hand - which is exactly why fans will love it. Newcomers, come in with patience. Everyone else who bounced off the original's controls: this is your second chance.

Score: 8/10
