Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Just Got Eight-Player Splitscreen on Switch 2 - Free
Nintendo has slipped a free update into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch 2 that lets eight people race on a single screen, splitting the picture into eight portrait-style windows. Couch chaos is officially back on the menu.

Honestly, this one got me. Eight players. One TV. Mario Kart. I didn't have this on my list for the year, and now it's just... here.
Nintendo has quietly dropped a free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch 2 that adds eight-player splitscreen. The trick is simple: the familiar four-player split gets carved up one more time, so instead of four quadrants you get eight tall, portrait-style windows lined up across the screen. It's available now, and it doesn't cost a thing.
Will each window be tiny? Of course it will. You'll be squinting at a sliver of Rainbow Road while your friend's elbow is in your ribs and someone is yelling about a blue shell. That's not a flaw - that's the whole point. Mario Kart has always been at its best when it's loud, cramped and slightly unfair, and eight people on one couch is about as loud and cramped as it gets.
What I love most is who this is for. Not the online grinders - this is for birthday parties, family gatherings, dorm rooms, that one friend with the huge TV. My nephew and I have burned countless evenings on four-player splitscreen, and the moment I read this I could already picture the full-family grid: grandma in window seven, refusing to let go of the wheel accessory.
And can we take a second to appreciate that this landed as a free update to a game that's been racing with us since the Wii U days? No deluxe re-release, no paid party pass. In a year where I've spent a lot of time grumbling about the price of everything in gaming, Nintendo handing long-time owners a genuinely new way to play - for nothing - feels almost old-fashioned. In the best way.
Now I just need six more controllers. And possibly a bigger couch.
