Metaphor: ReFantazio Has a Free Switch 2 Demo Now, and Your Save Carries Over

I have a confession: I bounced off Metaphor: ReFantazio the first time I tried it on PS5. Not because it was bad - it's one of the best RPGs of the last few years - but because a huge Atlus epic is a serious commitment, and I kept picking "just one more Mario Kart race with my nephew" instead. So the news that Atlus has quietly put a demo on the Switch 2 eShop ahead of next month's launch is exactly the nudge I needed.

Here's what matters: it's a "prologue" demo, which means it covers the opening section of the game. And, this is the part that got me, your save data transfers to the full game when it arrives on Switch 2 on 12 November 2026. Play the opening now, pick up where you left off in a month. No replaying the intro, no wasted evening.

That's a lovely way to do a demo, and honestly it's the way every big RPG should do it. The first few hours of a game like this are a lot: a new world, new vocabulary, combat systems with their own names for everything. Being able to chew through that slowly, on a handheld, on the sofa, while the proper release is still weeks away - that's a gift to anyone who finds these games a bit intimidating.

If you've never played an Atlus game, this is also a pretty low-risk way to find out whether their blend of calendar-driven social life and turn-based combat clicks with you. Metaphor takes the Persona formula and drops it into a fantasy kingdom with a royal election at its heart, and the opening really does set the tone. It makes a good first impression.

And for us Nintendo folks, the timing feels like a small milestone. Metaphor came out in 2024 on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and Nintendo players had to watch from the sidelines. Two years later it's not just coming to Switch 2, it's coming with the courtesy of a proper try-before-you-buy. More of this, please.

I'm downloading it tonight. If my nephew asks why I'm not playing Mario Kart, I'll tell him I'm busy running for king.
