MSI's Panther Lake Claw 8 Is the Best Handheld Yet - and You Probably Can't Justify It

Every handheld review lately follows the same arc: this thing is great, but. With MSI's new Claw 8 EX AI+ the 'but' is a four-digit number, and it's a big one.

Let's start with why people are excited, because they should be. This is the first handheld running Intel's Arc G3 Extreme - a 14-core Panther Lake chip with a Arc B390 iGPU - and by the numbers it's the fastest thing in the class. Reviewers have it beating AMD's Z2 Extreme in basically everything, with only a couple of small exceptions. More to the point, it's pushing proper native 1200p gameplay without leaning on frame generation or upscaling to fake the frames. That's a real shift. We've spent the whole handheld era treating 720p-ish with FSR as the honest target; a device that just renders the pixels is a different conversation.

The spec sheet is a flex

MSI didn't cheap out around the silicon either. You get 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 - fast memory that actually matters for an iGPU sharing it as VRAM - a 1TB SSD, and an 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz IPS panel. Connectivity is genuinely future-proof: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, USB4 and Thunderbolt 4, so docking this into a monitor and keyboard isn't an afterthought. The 80Wh battery is chunky, which you'll want given how hard that Panther Lake part can pull.

The compromises are the ones handhelds always carry. At 786g it's not light, and MSI went with a glossy screen, which is a choice I will never understand on a device you use outdoors or under a lamp. Reflections are the enemy of a handheld and someone at MSI apparently disagrees.

The price is the whole story

And here's the wall you hit: $1,799 in the US, €1,649 in Europe. That's not handheld money. That's a very good gaming laptop, or a desktop that'll embarrass this thing on raw performance and never run out of battery. The Arc G3 Extreme is a genuinely impressive part and MSI built a genuinely impressive device around it - the engineering isn't the problem. The problem is that 'best handheld I've used' and 'handheld most people can actually buy' have never been further apart.

If you're the sort who was going to spend flagship money on portable PC gaming regardless, the Claw 8 is now the one to beat. For everyone else, this is a preview of where the class is heading in a year or two, once Panther Lake trickles into devices that don't cost as much as a used car.
