Mycopunk Review: The Best 15 Bucks a Co-op Squad Can Spend

Mycopunk leaves Early Access with a 1.0 that makes its fungus-blasting robot co-op deeper and sillier. It shines with friends, falls flat alone. Score: 8/10.

Mycopunk Review: The Best 15 Bucks a Co-op Squad Can Spend

Mycopunk is one of those games that sneaks up on you. Pigeons at Play and Devolver Digital put it into Steam Early Access in July 2025 as a scrappy four-player co-op shooter about robot rejects hired by a megacorporation to scrub a planet clean of fungus. On October 20, 2026 it hits 1.0 on PC and, for the first time, PS5. The asking price is still $14.99, and PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers get it on day one at no extra cost.

How it plays

The loop is familiar if you've played Deep Rock Galactic: gather the squad in the orbital H.U.B., pick a mission and its modifiers, drop in, shoot a lot of tentacled fungal mess, get out. What makes Mycopunk its own thing is the upgrade system. Every gun has a honeycomb grid, and you slot upgrades into it like a puzzle, so adjacent pieces feed each other. Ricocheting shotgun pellets, bullets that hang in the air and then dive on command, a rocket launcher that doubles as a jetpack - by the third evening my squad was arguing about grid layouts the way other people argue about football.

Each robot has its own class moveset and abilities, but any character can use any weapon, so the game never locks you into one role. The enemies have a nasty trick too: some pick up the chunks you blast off their friends and grow bigger. You learn quickly to clean up the debris, which turns every fight into a bit of crowd control.

What 1.0 adds

The 1.0 update brings new guns, grenades, modes, maps, a new playable character and more cosmetics. It doesn't reinvent anything, but the extra variety fixes the biggest Early Access complaint - that after a dozen hours you'd seen most of what the planet had to offer.

The lows

Solo, Mycopunk is a much weaker game. The humour, the frantic call-outs, the build synergies - it all lives in the squad. With randoms it's fine; alone it gets repetitive fast. The visuals are bright and readable rather than impressive, and when four builds go off at once the screen turns into colourful soup.

Who it's for

If you have two or three friends and a free evening a week, this is the cheapest good time in co-op right now. In our region $14.99 is less than a pizza night for four, and if you're already on PS Plus Extra the PS5 version costs you nothing. Lone wolves should look elsewhere.

Verdict: a smart, generous, very funny co-op shooter whose upgrade grid keeps paying off. Bring friends.

Score: 8/10
