Pokémon Unite shuts down on 23 March 2027 - what happens to your Gems, and the download you mustn't skip

Honestly, this one stings a little. Pokémon Unite was the game I'd hand to anyone who said MOBAs were too scary - short matches, cute Pokémon, nobody yelling about lane assignments. My nephew learned what "teamwork" means in that game. And now The Pokémon Company has confirmed it's ending service on both Nintendo Switch and mobile.

The talk had been building since Unite was dropped from the World Championships circuit in July, so it isn't a total shock. But if you or your kids still play, there are a few practical things worth knowing right now, because some of them have deadlines.

The key dates

Already now: Aeos Gems can no longer be bought, and new Unite Club memberships and auto-renewals are switched off. If you're an existing member, your perks run until your current subscription expires.

12 November 2026: A free update arrives with a farewell event, where you can earn Unite Coins and swap them for in-game items and cosmetics (including things like Holo Wear and Unite Licenses). The same update adds the new Library feature.

23 March 2027, 00:00 UTC: Service ends. For us in Central Europe that's 01:00 in the night between 22 and 23 March, so your real last evening of matches is Monday the 22nd. After that, online battles are gone.

Your Gems: spend them or wait for the refund

You can keep spending whatever Gems you have left until shutdown. If you don't, unused Gems bought with real money will be refunded after the service ends - the exact steps are promised on the official Pokémon Unite website once the servers are off.

The catch that could cost you: don't delete the Switch software or uninstall the mobile app until the refund is done. It's worth checking your balance today, too - tap the "+" on the Home screen and look in the top-right corner of the Gem purchase screen.

The Library download is the one to set a reminder for

This is the bit I really don't want anyone to miss. The Library lets you look back at your battle records, the licenses you earned and your Holo Wear after the game shuts down - but only if you download the Library data before 23 March. Miss the deadline and that history is simply gone.

For families, that's a lovely little keepsake: years of matches, favourite outfits, the Pikachu you mained since 2021. Grab it early, not on the last night.

The Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament still goes ahead as planned, with qualifiers starting on 5 December, so competitive players get one proper send-off.

I'm glad there's a refund and a way to keep your memories - that's more care than a lot of live-service shutdowns get. It still makes me a bit sad that a game this welcoming couldn't find a way to keep going. I'll be in there with my nephew on the 12th, collecting coins one last time.
