Shenmue Fans Just Recruited a Man in a Trash Can to Beg Sega for Shenmue 4

Every fanbase has its diehards. Shenmue's are on another level entirely.

Here's the latest, and I promise I'm not making it up: Count Binface - a man who runs in UK elections wearing a literal trash can on his head, most recently going up against Nigel Farage - has now publicly called on Sega to make Shenmue 4. Fans got him to do it. That is where we are, and I could not adore this community more.

If you've never fallen down the Shenmue rabbit hole, a bit of background helps. Yu Suzuki's saga started on the Sega Dreamcast back in the day, an impossibly ambitious open-world adventure about a young man named Ryo chasing the truth behind his father's death. It was slow, strange, weirdly cozy, and decades ahead of its time - you could feed cats, work a forklift, and lose hours to arcade cabinets. It also never got a proper ending. Shenmue 3 finally arrived years later thanks to a record-breaking crowdfunding campaign, and then... quiet.

The most patient fandom in gaming

That quiet is exactly why this Count Binface bit is so perfect. Shenmue fans have spent literal decades keeping a candle lit for a story that keeps getting cut off mid-sentence. When you've waited that long, you get creative. You rope in a satirical politician in a bin costume, because at some point laughing about it together is the only sane response.

And there's real affection under the joke. I have such a soft spot for a fanbase that refuses to let a beloved underdog series just fade away. It's the same energy that got Shenmue 3 funded in the first place - people who genuinely care, being loud about it in the most charming way they can think of.

Will any of this actually move Sega? Probably not on its own. A stunt is a stunt. But campaigns like this keep the name alive, and a series only gets a real shot at coming back while people are still shouting its name.

So here's to the fans, and to a man in a trash can who apparently wants Ryo's story finished as badly as they do. If Sega's listening: the Dreamcast kids grew up, and they're still waiting.
