Dune: Awakening Goes Offline in November: Start Solo Now or Wait for January?
Offline single-player lands this month, the free Blood and Ice expansion on December 1, and character copying in January. Here's which character deserves your hours, and what Funcom still hasn't answered.

Three dates, one annoying question: if you want to play Dune: Awakening alone, which character do you put your hours into right now?
Funcom's roadmap decides it. Offline single-player arrives in November, with no exact day given yet. The free Blood and Ice expansion lands on December 1 on PC, PS5 and Xbox. Then January 2027 brings full cross-play and the feature that changes the maths: character copying, from multiplayer servers into single-player, and from single-player onto select private or self-hosted servers on PC.
That last part is the real news, and it's getting buried under the map talk. When solo mode went live in September, single-player characters were walled off from everything else. Anyone who started one had to accept that. Now the wall has a date, at least on PC.
Where to put your hours
You already have a serious multiplayer character. Stay put. Don't restart solo just because offline sounds nice, because January is supposed to bring that character over. Funcom's post doesn't say what a copied character keeps, only that you continue your progression in single-player. I'd want the patch notes spelling that out before trusting the copy with a few hundred hours.
You're new, or you bounced off the MMO side. Start in single-player today. There's no reason to sit around waiting for November: the mode already has three difficulty presets, plus manual control over things like XP gain, enemy strength and harvesting speed. If you're on PC and friends drag you onto a private or self-hosted server later, the January copy gives you a way across, with one condition from Funcom: the server has to allow copied characters. It's opt-in, so ask whoever runs the server before you plan around it.
You're on PS5 or Xbox. Funcom's post lists the route from single-player onto servers for PC only, so assume a solo character stays solo. If there's any chance you'll want to play with friends, start on a multiplayer server. The post puts no PC tag on the copy from multiplayer into single-player, so that direction should be open to you, and it's the one that keeps both options alive. January's cross-play is a separate thing: it changes who you can play with, not which character you can bring.
You care about official servers. Build there from the start. The announced routes don't include solo characters moving onto official servers, and I think that's the correct call. A character levelled on custom XP multipliers has no business walking into a shared PvP pool. Funcom has guarded this before, with official characters allowed out to private servers but not back in.
You mostly want it on a Steam Deck. This is where offline pays off the most. The game is Deck Verified, and a train with bad signal is the exact place a connection requirement hurts.
What Funcom hasn't said
The announcement gives November and very little else. No word on whether the offline mode needs an occasional check-in, or whether anything gets cut. The expansion is free for all players on all platforms, but nobody has spelled out whether the Polar Sink reaches offline play on day one, or how paid cosmetics behave without a connection.
There are no performance claims either, so anyone promising better 1% lows from going offline is guessing. Whether there's a gain depends on what the current mode still talks to a server about. I'll believe it when I've logged the frametimes.
As for December, Blood and Ice adds a frozen map split into tundra and ice cap biomes, with roughly 35 hours of progression and cold-weather gear that needs resources found only up there. It also brings a cosmetics store with outfits, vehicle variants and base items, some of them looks from the films. Paid skins funding free maps is a trade I can live with. Rotating stock is the part I don't like, since it exists to make you buy now. Funcom says a later update will keep the full catalogue available at all times, so patience costs you nothing unless you're desperate to dress like a film extra.
Maps and skins will carry the December headlines. The feature that still matters once the last official server goes dark is whether this game can launch without asking anyone's permission, and Funcom owes us that answer this month.
