Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Might Not Get a Disc - and That's a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

So here's a small line from a Berlin fan festival that says a lot about where this hobby is heading: Square Enix can't yet confirm that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation - the third and final chapter of the remake trilogy, due spring 2027 - will get a physical disc at all. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told GamesRadar+ he's personally pushing for one, but he can't promise anything.

On its own that sounds like a minor logistics footnote. It isn't. Look at the calendar. Sony has already said it stops producing discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. Revelation lands roughly a year before that door closes - so technically it *could* still get pressed. Whether it does now comes down to a publisher's spreadsheet, not the hardware.

Why a disc is worth fighting for

When a game is disc-only-optional and goes digital, you don't just lose a box on the shelf. You lose the ability to sell it when you're done. You lose lending it to a friend. You lose buying it used for less six months later, and you lose the option of picking up a physical copy on the second-hand market at a price that isn't set entirely by one store.

That's the part the industry quietly skips over. Sony's own numbers say nearly four in five full-game purchases on PS4 and PS5 are already digital - which is exactly the stat used to justify killing discs. But 'most people already do it' isn't the same as 'nobody loses anything.' A digital-only trilogy capper means the closing chapter of one of the biggest RPG series ever has no resale value the day you finish it.

For a full-price release that stings. New tentpole games routinely launch around 70 to 80 euros here, and a disc you can flip afterwards effectively lowers that cost. Remove the disc and the real price quietly goes up, even if the sticker doesn't move.

I'm glad Hamaguchi is fighting for it, and I hope he wins. But the fact that a director of a marquee Final Fantasy has to *lobby* for a disc tells you everything about which way the wind is blowing. Spring 2027 will be here fast. If a physical Revelation doesn't materialize, treat it as the preview of every big release after January 2028 - and start thinking now about what a fully digital shelf actually costs you.
