Santa Monica's next God of War has a release date, a new figure at the center of it, and a small physical-media win that means more than you'd think.

God of War Laufey Gets a Date - February 16, 2027 - and Sony Kept It on Disc

Okay, I'll admit it - I let out a little gasp when the date flashed up. God of War Laufey has a release date, and it's February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio dropped it at their San Diego Comic-Con panel, and after months of "soon," seeing actual numbers on the screen just hits different.

What I love here is that the studio isn't just handing us Kratos again on autopilot. The whole game is built around Laufey, and that shift in focus is a bold move for a series this beloved. Sony could have played it safe. Instead they're leaning into a new center of gravity for the story, and honestly, that's the kind of confidence I want from a first-party team that's already earned our trust.

The disc detail I didn't expect to care about this much

Here's the part that made me sit up. Laufey is shipping on-disc - a proper physical release. That might sound like a footnote in 2027, but it lands right after Sony said it plans to stop producing PlayStation discs from 2028, a decision that kicked off a real backlash. So getting a marquee exclusive like this pressed onto a disc feels less like a given and more like a small stand for the people who still want to own their games on a shelf.

I'm one of those people. My nephew and I trade discs back and forth, lend them to friends, keep the ones that meant something. A download code in a box just doesn't do that. So yeah, a physical God of War in early 2027 is a genuine little gift to collectors and families, and I'm not going to pretend it isn't.

And there's more coming after

Santa Monica's Cory Barlog also let slip that the next Kratos-led God of War is on the way after Laufey - and it connects directly to her story. So this isn't a side trip. Laufey is setting up whatever comes next, which reframes the whole thing: you're not just playing a spin-off, you're planting the seeds for the following chapter.

That's a smart way to keep a saga breathing without running Kratos into the ground. Give the spotlight to someone new, tell a story that matters on its own, then swing back around to the big guy when it counts.

February feels a long way off, and February 2027 even further. But I've got a date now, a disc to look forward to, and the promise that this is all building toward something. For a Tuesday's worth of Comic-Con news, that's a lovely haul.
