Kingdom Hearts IV Lands Late 2027 - And Yes, It's Coming to Switch 2

Confession time: I'd almost made peace with Kingdom Hearts IV being one of those games we just... believe in. Announced back in 2022, then years of near-silence. And now, at Disney's D23 showcase, we suddenly got a proper new trailer, a release window and the platform list I've been quietly hoping for. Late 2027, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC - and Nintendo Switch 2.

Yes, Switch 2. A mainline Kingdom Hearts launching on a Nintendo console right alongside everyone else. If you lived through the Switch 1 era - when the classic Kingdom Hearts collections arrived as cloud versions that fell apart the moment your Wi-Fi hiccuped - you know exactly why that one line in the trailer made me so happy. Nintendo players finally get to be at the party from day one, not watching through the window.

Sora goes to the Land of the Dead

The trailer's big reveal is that Pixar's Coco is in the game. Sora visits the Land of the Dead, and reports from the showcase say Miguel and Hector are along for the ride. Honestly, of all the Pixar worlds they could have picked, Coco might be the most emotionally loaded one imaginable - a story about family, memory and the people we refuse to forget, dropped into a series that's already obsessed with hearts and the friends we carry with us. If Square Enix leans into that even a little, keep tissues nearby. I'm not joking.

And there was a bonus: Disney also announced a Kingdom Hearts animated series - working title Kingdom Hearts: The Series - made in partnership with Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix, with an original story headed to Disney+ and the Disney Channel.

Late 2027 is still a long way off, and release windows do have a habit of drifting. But after years of "it exists, trust us," having an actual window and an actual platform list feels like something you can hold onto. My nephew will be exactly the right age for this one when it arrives. Honestly? So will I.
