LEGO PlayStation is out now for Insiders - and a tiny Astro Bot comes along for free

Honestly, the grey box got me before I even read the price.

The LEGO set based on the original PlayStation is now available, and it's a near 1:1 scale recreation of the console that so many of us first saw under a TV in somebody's living room. Mine was a cousin's, and I wasn't allowed to touch the controller for the first hour. Building one brick by brick feels like a very satisfying kind of revenge.

Here's the catch, and it's a gentle one: right now you need to be a LEGO Insider to buy it. The good news is that the Insiders program is free to join, so this is more of a sign-up step than a real paywall. If you'd rather not make an account, general sales open on October 4.

The set costs $179.99, and it comes with a little extra that might be the real star - a LEGO Astro Bot, included as a free gift with purchase. As someone who still thinks Astro Bot is the most joyful thing PlayStation has made in years, I love that Team Asobi's cheerful robot gets to stand next to the hardware that started it all. It's a neat little bridge between the 1990s and today.

There's a warning worth taking seriously, though. Sets like this can sell out fast, and gift-with-purchase extras tend to run out even sooner. If the Astro Bot is a big part of why you want this, waiting until October 4 is a gamble. I'm not a fan of urgency marketing in general, but in this case the free sign-up really is the easiest way to avoid disappointment.

Who's it for? Clearly grown-up collectors with a soft spot for the PS1 era first - this is a display piece, not a toy you'll be swooshing around the room. But I can already picture building it with my nephew, who knows Astro Bot inside out and has never seen a real original PlayStation. Explaining memory cards to him while we snap bricks together sounds like a pretty perfect Sunday.

At $179.99 it's not an impulse buy, and that's fair to say out loud. Still, if this console holds a piece of your childhood, I get it completely. I might be clearing a shelf.
