Arc Raiders goes free for four days - here's how to actually use that window

Embark is opening the full Arc Raiders to everyone from 8 to 12 October alongside the Frozen Trail update. Four days is a real demo, not a two-hour refund gamble - but only if you treat it like one.

Arc Raiders goes free for four days - here's how to actually use that window

Four days. Not a two-hour Steam refund window where you're still staring at the tutorial when the clock runs out, not a "demo" with half the map fenced off - the full Arc Raiders, free, from 8 to 12 October, on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. Embark is tying it to Frozen Trail, which the studio is calling the biggest update the game has had so far, and according to Eurogamer, Embark also says a large PvE test follows after it. That's the news. The more interesting question is what a normal player here should do with it.

I'll say the obvious part first: this is a stress test with a marketing hat on. Every free weekend in the history of free weekends has been a way to fill the servers right when the studio wants to show off something new. That's fine. It just means you should expect lobbies full of people who've been playing since launch, and a fair chunk of your first evening will be spent dying to someone who knows every rooftop in Speranza. Don't judge the game on that evening.

What I like is that there's no locked content. Arc Raiders isn't free-to-play - you buy it once - and the usual problem with paid extraction shooters is that you can't tell whether the loop clicks for you without paying first. Two hours on Steam isn't enough for this genre; the whole point is the slow build of gear, the fear of losing it, the moment you finally extract with something good. Four days is enough to feel that, or to feel nothing and close it with no money spent.

So, practically:

Play on the platform you'd actually buy it on. Trying it on a friend's PS5 tells you little about how it runs on your three-year-old PC.

Don't buy it before the trial ends. If it grabs you, the price will still be there on the 12th, and check the regional price on your store rather than the dollar figure you'll see quoted everywhere.

Treat the first session as a tutorial, not a verdict. Veterans will farm the newcomers for the first day or two. By day three you'll know if the game is for you.

And a note of caution I'd give for any game: a free trial tells you how the game feels this week. It doesn't tell you what it costs over a year, how often the shop pushes you, or how the PvE direction Embark is testing will change the thing you tried. Those answers come later. But as a way to decide whether that chunk of your gaming budget goes here or somewhere else, four days of the full game is about as honest an offer as this genre makes.
