PS Plus August: three games, and Signalis is the one that matters

Sony is calling the August PlayStation Plus lineup a "banger," and I'll admit my first reaction was a raised eyebrow. Three games. That's it. But once you look past the marketing adjectives, this is a month where quality quietly does the heavy lifting.

The headline act for me isn't the big name - it's Signalis. That retro-styled psychological horror gem flew under a lot of radars when it launched, and dropping it into the subscription is exactly what these programs should be for: putting a smaller, brilliant game in front of people who'd never have bought it blind. If you like your horror tense and claustrophobic rather than jump-scare loud, this is the reason to log in.

The genuine value, though, is Big Walk - a co-op adventure landing straight into PS Plus on day one. A brand-new game you don't pay extra for is worth far more than a catalogue title you skipped years ago on purpose. Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition rounds things out, and after all its post-launch patching it's a much better open world than the one that shipped. Solid, if not exactly a surprise.

There's also a cosmetic pack for MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls - five network avatars from August 6. Nice, but let's not pretend a Spider-Man icon is a system seller.

The math that actually counts

All three land on August 4 for Essential, Extra and Premium tiers, so even the cheapest subscription gets everything here. That's the honest selling point. But remember what these Monthly Games really are: rentals. Claim them, and you keep access only while you keep paying. Stop the subscription and they're gone.

So the question for anyone here watching every euro isn't "are these good games" - two of the three clearly are. It's whether you'd have actually bought any of them at full price. If the answer is Signalis or Big Walk, this month pays for itself. If it's neither, a light August is a perfectly good excuse to let the subscription lapse and pocket the difference.
