If you've been sitting on a RAM upgrade waiting for prices to dip, I've got bad news: the dip isn't coming, and the next kit might cost you a lot more.

Apacer's CEO has warned that memory supply could fall by as much as 70% in 2027. That's not a typo. The reason is boring and infuriating in equal measure - the DRAM you want for your gaming rig is the same silicon the AI industry is buying by the truckload for data centers.

Why your DIMM is competing with a server farm

Roughly 60% of DRAM capacity is now pointed at server-related applications. When the fabs can sell every wafer to hyperscalers on multi-year contracts, guess who gets deprioritized? The consumer channel - you, me, the guy speccing a 32GB DDR5 build. Apacer's own move tells the story: they're trying to lock in as much inventory as they can right now, because they see the squeeze coming.

The CEO reportedly expects price increases to at least moderate in the second half of 2026. Moderate, not reverse. So the memory tax you're already paying isn't going away; it's just supposed to stop climbing quite as fast before 2027 potentially yanks the floor out.

What this means for a build in 2026

I don't like fear-buying, and I'm not going to tell you to panic-hoard sticks like the two geniuses who literally got arrested this week for stealing RAM out of esports hotels. But the calculus for anyone planning a build has shifted.

If you're on the fence about capacity, buy the 32GB kit now instead of "16GB now, add more later." Later is exactly when this gets expensive. Same logic for anyone eyeing a handheld or a prebuilt - shared LPDDR5X is the same constrained pool, and those margins are thin enough that vendors will pass the cost straight to you.

The part that stings is that none of this is a manufacturing disaster or a fire at a fab. It's a demand shift. The AI boom decided your gaming RAM was better spent training models, and the market agreed. Frame times I can tune. A 70% supply cliff I can't config my way around.
