Sony Is Reportedly Sticking 'Physical Games Are Ending' Warnings on PS5 Boxes

There's a shelf in my living room with every PlayStation disc I've ever owned, going back to demo discs I got with magazines. My nephew "borrows" from it constantly. So you can imagine my face reading this one.

According to a new IGN report, PlayStation 5 consoles are now shipping with advisory stickers on the box - a little label reminding buyers that production of physical games is coming to an end. It follows Sony's decision to stop producing physical game discs starting January 2028, a call that sparked plenty of backlash when it was announced and clearly hasn't gotten more popular since.

A quick caveat: this is based on stickers reportedly spotted on PS5 boxes, so treat the details with a bit of care. But the direction of travel isn't in question. Sony set the date, and stickering the boxes reads like a company quietly telling us it isn't changing its mind.

Credit where it's due - and a but

Honestly, here's the strange part: the sticker itself is arguably the right thing to do. If you're buying a console with a disc drive in 2026, you deserve to know that the discs it plays are on borrowed time. That's basic honesty at the point of sale, and I'd rather have it than not.

But let's not confuse honest labeling with a good decision. Physical games are how a lot of us share this hobby. They're the copy you lend a friend, the birthday gift for a kid without a credit card, the game that still works when your internet doesn't, the box you find for half price two years later. They're also how games survive - preservation gets a lot harder when everything lives on a storefront that can be switched off.

And for families especially - my beat, my people - discs are the affordable on-ramp. Second-hand games are how plenty of kids build a library. A digital-only future asks everyone to pay full freight, forever, on Sony's terms.

So yes, points for the warning label. But I'd trade a thousand stickers for one reversal. Until January 2028, my shelf keeps growing - and my nephew keeps borrowing.
