Wolverine Runs Fully From Disc - Savour It, It May Be One of the Last

There's a ritual around here that Sony's spreadsheet department apparently never priced in: you buy a big single-player game, finish it in two or three weeks, then sell the disc on the local classifieds or pass it to a mate. Half the region played God of War that way. Which is why a small clarification from Insomniac this week matters more than it sounds.

Marvel's Wolverine, out on PlayStation 5 on 15 September, will be "fully playable on the disc when you purchase it", senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed told Eurogamer at a preview event. Not a plastic download voucher. Not a disc-in-a-box that forces a full download before you can press start. A game that actually lives on the physical media you paid for.

The fact this needed clarifying at all tells you where things stand. Sony is winding down production of PlayStation discs, the controversy around that decision hasn't calmed down, and Eurogamer's framing is blunt: Wolverine may end up being one of the last fully disc-based PlayStation games.

Why the disc still matters in our region

For a lot of Western commentators this is a nostalgia piece. Here it's arithmetic. A full-price PS5 game is a serious chunk of a monthly budget in this part of Europe, and for many players the maths only works because the disc holds resale value. Finish it, sell it, fund the next one. Lend it to a friend, borrow theirs back. That informal circulation is how plenty of people locally get through a year of releases without going broke - and none of it exists in a digital-only world, where you don't really own a game so much as rent a licence tied to one account.

Then there's the boring practical stuff. Not everyone has a connection that casually swallows a modern blockbuster install. And a disc that genuinely contains the game keeps working long after servers, storefronts and somebody's quarterly strategy have moved on.

So credit to Insomniac for leaning against the current, even if one studio's stubbornness won't reverse Sony's direction. My honest advice: if Wolverine is on your list, this is the one to buy on disc while "on disc" still means what it says. In a couple of years, that box might be one of the last PlayStation games you can simply hand to another human being.
