Media Molecule Is Reportedly Making a Cozy Social Sim - and I'm Trying Very Hard to Stay Calm
A new report says the LittleBigPlanet and Dreams studio is building a social-sim game in the spirit of Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, with both the reveal and the release pencilled in for 2027. Nothing is official yet - but the fit is almost too good.

I'll be honest with you: if you'd asked me to write down the one studio I most wanted to see make a cozy game, I'd have written Media Molecule before you finished the question.
So this week's report landed on me like a warm blanket. According to MP1st, citing sources familiar with the project, the PlayStation studio behind LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway and Dreams has been quietly working on a social-simulation game inspired by Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. The plan, if everything holds, is to both announce it and release it in 2027.
Before we all start decorating imaginary cottages, the careful part. This is a report, not an announcement. Neither Media Molecule nor Sony has said a word. There's no title, no trailer, no screenshot, no confirmed platform. MP1st itself is upfront that development plans shift, and that a reveal next year is a safer bet than a launch. Treat 2027 as a hope, not a date.
Why this fits so well
Think about what Media Molecule has always been good at. LittleBigPlanet was a platformer on the surface, but the thing people remember is the feeling - the stitched-together, handmade world, the sense that someone built it for you with their actual hands. Tearaway did the same with paper. Dreams, the studio's last big release back in 2020, handed players an entire creative toolbox.
A life sim is a genre that lives or dies on exactly that kind of warmth. Animal Crossing works because your town feels like yours. Harvest Moon worked because the routine felt like care, not chores. Put those ideas in the hands of a team that has spent its whole existence making games about making things, and I genuinely can't think of a better match.
There's one more crumb. Earlier this year, a Media Molecule employee's resume reportedly described the studio's next game as open-world. If both details are true - and that's a real if - we could be looking at something roomier than a single village. I'm not going to guess beyond that, because nobody outside the studio knows.
The report also says this isn't a live-service game, although MP1st adds it wouldn't be surprised to see some live-service elements in there. That's the bit I'll be watching. A cozy game with seasonal events is lovely. A cozy game built around a storefront is a different thing entirely, and the families and newcomers who'd love this most are the ones who deserve a clear, fair deal.
Still. PlayStation has been short on exactly this kind of game for years - something gentle you can play with a kid on the sofa, or alone with a cup of tea after a long day. Nintendo has owned that space almost unchallenged. If anyone on Sony's side can walk into it with a real personality of their own, it's the people who gave us Sackboy.
I'm keeping my expectations in a drawer until there's something official to look at. But the drawer is open a little.
