Minecraft Lands on Switch 2 on 27 October - and Cartridge Owners Have Questions

Mojang has confirmed 27 October as the release date for the native Switch 2 version of Minecraft, with Vibrant Visuals on by default. A digital upgrade path for existing Switch owners is promised - but pricing and terms, especially for physical copies, remain unanswered.

Minecraft Lands on Switch 2 on 27 October - and Cartridge Owners Have Questions

In our region, Minecraft on the Switch is practically standard family equipment. It's the game grandparents buy for birthdays, often on cartridge, because a physical box is easier to gift and easier to resell once the kid moves on. Which is exactly why the fine print of this week's announcement matters more than the release date itself.

The date first: Mojang has confirmed the native Switch 2 version of Minecraft arrives on 27 October. It's the port everyone expected ever since it leaked through an ESRB rating in June, with Nintendo confirming it in a Direct shortly after. The Switch 2 edition ships with Vibrant Visuals - the reworked lighting and shadows - switched on by default, though Mojang notes they won't apply in split-screen play or with some Marketplace content. The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack is getting a matching facelift too.

The word "digital" is doing a lot of work

Now the part that concerns most households around here. Mojang says existing Switch players will get a "digital upgrade path" - and that's essentially the whole sentence. No price, no timing, no word on whether it's free or paid, and crucially no word on what happens if your copy of Minecraft is a cartridge rather than a download.

That last bit isn't a niche concern in our region. Physical is still how a big share of Switch games are bought locally - partly habit, partly because a cartridge can be lent to a cousin or sold on when you're done with it. If the upgrade path turns out to be digital-only in the strict sense, tied to a digital purchase, plenty of families would be looking at buying the game a second time.

To be fair, Mojang hasn't said that. It has simply said more details are coming, which I've learned to read as: the details aren't the fun part. Nintendo's own Switch 2 Edition upgrades have ranged from reasonable to eyebrow-raising, so there's precedent in both directions.

My advice until the terms are public: don't rush anything. Minecraft isn't going anywhere, your worlds aren't going anywhere, and the Switch 1 version will work on 27 October exactly as it did the day before. The only real question is how much respect Mojang shows the people who already paid once - and we'll find that out soon enough.
