Minecraft's first new dimension since 2011 has a catch: you see it in Dungeons 2 first
Mojang is adding The Sift to Minecraft on Java and Bedrock in 2027 - but it debuts a year earlier in Minecraft Dungeons 2, out September 29. A smart teaser or a paywalled preview?

Fourteen years. That's how long Minecraft has lived with exactly three dimensions - the Overworld, the Nether and The End, the last of which arrived back in 2011. Plenty of today's players weren't even born when it did. So when Mojang announced a fourth one, called The Sift, it was always going to be big news.
The headline part is genuinely good: The Sift is coming to the base game on both Java and Bedrock in 2027. Minecraft content updates have always landed for existing owners without an extra purchase, and nothing so far suggests this one will be different.
The less glamorous part is the order of things. The Sift doesn't debut in Minecraft at all. It shows up first in Minecraft Dungeons 2, which releases on September 29 - tomorrow - and it's woven into that game's story. So if your kid wants to see the new dimension this year rather than next, the answer is a separate game.
I don't think that's a scandal. It's a clever bit of cross-promotion, and a spin-off using its moment to show off where the main game is heading makes sense. But let's call it what it is: a year-long preview window aimed squarely at the most impatient part of the Minecraft audience, which is mostly children and, by extension, their parents' wallets.
What it means for players in our region
Minecraft is everywhere here - school playgrounds, tablets, cheap laptops, consoles bought second-hand. Microsoft says the game still pulls in around 300,000 brand-new players every day, and a good share of those are exactly the young kids who will see Sift clips on YouTube this week and ask for Dungeons 2.
My advice to parents is simple: nobody is missing out permanently. If the spin-off appeals as a game in its own right - a dungeon crawler your family actually wants to play - great, that's a fair reason to buy it. If the only draw is The Sift, waiting for the free Minecraft update is completely reasonable. And there's no harm in watching for sales or bundles before paying full price.
What actually lives inside The Sift is still thin on detail. Mojang has shown a starting biome called the Meadows and a desert-style area named the Carapace, full of huge bone structures, all in warm red and orange tones. That's a nice first look, but a dimension stands or falls on what it adds to survival play - new resources, new reasons to go there - and we won't know that until the base-game version is closer.
A new dimension after fourteen years is worth being excited about. Just don't let a release schedule talk you into buying something you weren't planning to.
