Minecraft Lands on Switch 2 on October 27 - Now Just Tell Us What the Upgrade Costs
Mojang has dated the native Switch 2 version of Minecraft for October 27, with Vibrant Visuals on by default and world transfers from Switch. The one thing still missing: whether the digital upgrade is free.

My nephew has played exactly one game consistently since he was six, and it is not any of the ones I keep buying him. It is Minecraft. So when Mojang finally put a date on the native Switch 2 version, I knew whose bedroom that news was really landing in.
October 27. That is when Minecraft shows up properly on Switch 2 - not as an older Switch build being politely tolerated by newer hardware, but as its own version with Vibrant Visuals switched on by default. Enhanced lighting, better shadows, volumetric fog. The kind of thing that makes a sunrise over your lopsided dirt hut look almost intentional.
The part that actually matters: your world comes with you
Existing worlds can be carried over to the Switch 2 version. Honestly, that lands bigger for me than any lighting pass. Minecraft saves are not really files, they are diaries. That mine you dug for a whole rainy weekend. The animal pen your kid built badly on purpose. Nobody wants a prettier game if the price is starting from an empty spawn point, and Mojang clearly knows it, even if the exact transfer process has not been walked through yet.
The Nintendo-only Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is getting an update too, so it makes proper use of the new lighting. It is a small thing, but it is the kind of small thing Nintendo players notice - that pack has been a quiet mascot for the Nintendo versions of Minecraft for years now.
And then there is the question nobody answered
Mojang says a digital upgrade path will be available for Switch players. What it has not said is whether that upgrade costs anything. More details to follow, apparently.
I am going to be gentle about this, because we do not know yet and it might turn out lovely. But Minecraft is the game that has been sold to the same families across roughly every console generation since 2011, often more than once per household. If there is one number those families want up front, it is this one. Leaving it as a to-be-announced right after you have shown everyone the pretty fog feels like the wrong order to do things in.
So: cautiously delighted. A native Switch 2 Minecraft with nicer light and your old worlds intact is a genuinely lovely thing to have in late October, right when it starts getting dark at five and building indoors becomes the whole personality of a weekend.
I just know that on October 27 I will be sitting on a kid's bedroom floor looking at that fog, and I would quite like to know beforehand what the fog costs.
